What is a clipping mask?

Clipping masks are one of the most useful tools inside of Photoshop.

They allow for one layer to be placed inside another. For example you might want an image to be placed inside text, we are going to attempt to create that now.

Step 1.

Create a new document of any size. Then using the text tool, write a word of your choice.

Step 2.

Next take your image you wish to place inside your text and place it above.

Step 3.

Then you can go LAYER > CREATE CLIPPING MASK. This will place your image inside the text.

Natually you could use the shortcut instead. CMD/CTRL + SHIFT + G this will speed up the process.

Thats all there is too it.

You can move the image around inside the mask, so you don't have to worry about lining the image up correctly in the first place.

You can create a clipping mask with any layer/object. Brillant for re-colouring and photography work.

You can also still apply layer effects to the images.
